Being able to work with the land here on Kumeyaay territory is not only about restoring canyons but preserving the connection their ancestors had with the land. For them, home is not only the four walls that surround us when we sleep — home encompasses the ecosystem in its entirety. They are passionate about continuing to create a place that future generations can call home, a place where families can connect with one another, a place where we coexist with other living organisms because we are all part of nature.</image:caption>

Passionate about conservation work and habitat restoration, she received a degree in Sustainability from SDSU and has worked for organizations such as San Diego Coastkeeper, Hawaii State Parks, and the California Department of Fish and Wildlife. In her free time you can find her outside whether it’s gardening, petting her sunbathing cat, or making stained glass. On weekends if she’s not searching for an uncrowded surf lineup, you can find her enjoying local outdoor spaces.</image:caption>

<image:caption>I was born and raised in the Little Village neighborhood in Chicago and spent most of my childhood outdoors playing and climbing trees. I've been living here in San Diego since 2013 and my love for the outdoors has only grown. I have a degree in Sustainable Landscape Practices and am currently studying Arboriculture at Cuyamaca College. Before coming to Canyonlands, I was helping community members build native plant gardens, helping out at Pixca Farm in the South Bay, taking tree climbing class and monitoring newly planted trees in Balboa Park as a Tree Steward. I plan to become a certified Arborist and would like to help plant and maintain city trees in areas where there are few green spaces. When I’m not in the canyons, you can find me climbing trees, bird watching at the Tijuana Estuary or camping out in the desert and mountains.</image:caption>

Apart from his short time in-person at UCLA, Ian has lived in the North Park community of San Diego all his life, and has always cherished being just a short walk, bike or skateboard trip away from many beautiful canyons. He is excited to spend this next year working in, learning from and hopefully making a difference for the habitat he loves with the crew. Outside of work, you can almost always find Ian among birds—following wild birds with his favorite binoculars, volunteering with rescued birds at a local animal sanctuary or dancing with his companion birds, Bunji and Cooee.</image:caption>

Their background in Yoga (Raja, Hatha, Bhakti), backpacking, writing, and photography brings forth their passion for the natural world and its diversified inhabitants. Bees and carpenter ants are their favorite species to study. River moved to San Diego in 2017 where they fell in love with San Diego’s rich biodiversity and personified ecosystems, taking classes at San Diego Mesa College to learn more about the Southern Coast and continue toward a degree in sustainability. As well as joining the Canyonlands team in 2022, they also work at REI where they seek ways to increase awareness of sustainability, ecological awareness, and social equity as a means for climate justice in daily conversations. It is their hope and mission to share their love of nature with others and create a community where all living beings may thrive, no matter how big or small or niche it has to be in order to take root. In their free time, River is often found either at home with their two cats, hiking, practicing yoga in nature, watching insects, or playing their guitar under the stars.</image:caption>

Before coming to SD Canyonlands, I managed a community garden project in National City, interned with the IRC on a high school gardening project in City Heights, and had a personal project of conserving heirloom seeds. Before joining Canyonlands, Iriany spent four years supervising a K-8 educational program, overseeing up to 80 students. She has participated in Peace & Dignity Run, which is an Indigenous/Native prayer run that connects first people across the continent. Her professional and personal experiences inform her passion for educating youth on indigenous ways of being in community with the land, especially urban youth that may not have access to big natural spaces. Iriany believes that when collaborating with nature, we can remind ourselves of the vastness of nature that is available to us, even in cities. She hopes to co-create spaces for urban youth to know that even through society, family, and personal changes – the earth is constant. There’s no better way for youth to interact with this truth than by being an active participant in creating structures for community well-being, safety, and belonging.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Kayden was born and raised in San Diego in the University City area, and graduated from the University of California, Davis in 2021. Their passion for science and drive to understand the mechanisms of the world around them led them to earn their B.S. in Environmental Science and Management. They hope to pursue further environmental education to one day work in and study California’s limnetic systems and hydrobiology. In their free time, they love to read fantasy books, crochet, build Legos, and spend time outdoors. Kayden is currently focused on volunteer engagement and social media content creation. They are happy to respond to any inquiries regarding collaboration via social media or questions from volunteers!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Madelyn was born and raised in the suburbs of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and moved to San Diego in 2020 to study at San Diego State University. With an avid gardener grandmother, and a mother who spent over two decades working as a florist, she grew up with a love for flowers and nature. Madelyn has earned her B.A. in Sustainability and minor in Anthropology, and has a passion for connecting people with their environment. When not working, she finds joy in reading, spending time with friends, caring for her many plants, and practicing yoga. Madelyn supports both the outreach and restoration departments. <image:caption>Abby was born in North Carolina but moved to Santa Cruz, California as a very young child. She spent most of her free time growing up exploring the redwood forests, hiking, swimming in the ocean, and observing the wildlife that is abundantly found in Santa Cruz. She moved to San Diego in 2019 and graduated from SDSU in 2024 with a B.A. in Sustainability. She is excited to utilize her education and love for the outdoors as a first time fellow with San Diego Canyonlands. <image:caption>Miya was raised in Washington State and moved to San Diego in 2021, where she worked while finishing her degree in Biology: Conservation and Ecology. She grew up spending most of her time outdoors and visiting West Seattle in the summer, where she noticed a decline in the state of biodiversity at the beaches. Watching one of their favorite spots deteriorate she knew she wanted to work to protect and enhance the natural environment in any way possible. In her free time Miya enjoys spending time with her dog, reading, going outside, or picking up a new hobby. Miya is looking forward to her time with San Diego Canyonlands and is more than happy to help others discover how they can contribute to conservation efforts.</image:caption>

<image:caption>Anabel was born and raised in Watsonville, California, where she explored the beautiful beaches and redwood forests of Santa Cruz. Growing up with access to these stunning landscapes cultivated her strong passion for conservation and sustainability. She pursued her undergraduate degree at the University of California, Santa Barbara, and graduated in 2024 with a Bachelor’s of Science in Environmental Studies. During her time in Santa Barbara, she gained experience doing rocky intertidal species identification, wetland health monitoring, and nonprofit projects, all of which deepened her love for environmental work. She relocated to San Diego in August 2025, and is excited to continue to learn about important California ecosystems and connect communities with the environment through her work with San Diego Canyonlands. <image:title>Our Fellows - SARAH THOMPSON</image:title>
<image:caption>Sarah’s background as a skateboarder for over 15 years sparked her curiosity about how cities are designed and how people move through them. She graduated from UC San Diego with a B.A. in Urban Studies & Planning and is passionate about expanding equitable access to green spaces and strengthening the urban–wildlands interface through community-driven planning. With a background in food systems research, community engagement, and climate adaptation, she views trails and open spaces as both ecological corridors and mobility networks that connect neighborhoods. Her ambitions are rooted in the belief that resilient landscapes must connect both people and ecosystems and has committed to a lifetime of learning. In her free time, Sarah enjoys going to new skateparks, concerts, and hiking with her cat, Yzma.</image:caption>
