Canyon Enhancement Planning (CEP)

San Diego Canyonlands (SDCL) has established a committee of urban design visionaries, professional landscape architects, and others to create a Canyon Enhancement Planning (CEP) Guide for community stakeholders.  The CEP Guide will facilitate a systems approach for implementing a regional vision that integrates our natural open spaces with the fabric of the urban environment including: visual and physical canyon access, restoration, preservation, environment-based education and ecologically sensitive recreation.  See the CEP Brochure for more information.

Current Project Area   |  City Heights Canyons Loop Trail (4 Canyons)

A larger goal for City Heights Canyons is the creation of a loop trail that connects four City Heights Canyons.  Click here to see the map showing the possible loop trails and "canyon corridors" that will connect four City Heights canyons to one another as part of the implementation of the CEP plans.

Loop

#1 - Manzanita-Lexington Canyon  |  Action Plan Completed, Projects Underway

To facilitate the development of the CEP Guide, SDCL chose Manzanita-Lexington Canyon in City Heights as a pilot project.  Using a set of Existing Conditions Maps (below), SDCL held a series of five stakeholder meetings. On February 10, 2011 the stakeholders finalized their Action Plan for Enhancements in Manzanita Canyon (scroll down to see the Action Plan Map and computer simulations of other plan components).  Progress has been made on several of the Action Plan's items, including USFWS funding for wetland restoration, as well as a refurbished connector trail between Azalea Park and the south end of the canyon (formerly a dead end), completed with the help from Urban Corps volunteers and KTU&A Landscape Architect John Holloway.

#2 - Swan Canyon  |  Mapping Completed, Stakeholder Workshops Underway

Existing Conditions Maps for the second City Heights canyon are completed.  We are holding quasi-monthly Stakeholder Workshops to plan enhancements in Swan Canyon.  Fourth workshop is scheduled for Wednesday 1/25/12, 3:00-5:00pm at the Hamilton Elementary School Auditorium - all are welcome!
