City Sponsorship of Parkland Dedication Legislation Approved!

01.24.12  Thank you for your letter in support of parkland/open space dedication sent to Mayor Sanders and San Diego City Council. Yours was one of nearly 800 letters sent in the last four weeks and our elected officials agreed with you.  Last night, the City Council cast a critical vote to move the dedication process forward by making it one of the City's 2012 state legislative priorities.  Mayor Sanders will send a support letter to key members of the state legislature to support the Senate Bill that Senator Christine Kehoe will author.  As with the 2007 legislation, control over which parcels will be dedicated will rest entirely with the City.

SDCL will continue facilitating the public vetting process to assist the City in determining what parcels will be dedicated this year.  We hope to have a final action by City Council in the fall.

SDCL is pleased to have the support of Mayor Sanders and all City Council Members with the exception of Council Member Carl DeMaio, who voted against the legislative package when he didn't receive any support for adding a list of his legislative priorities.

Thank you for your swift and essential action on this matter!

When you look at a Google Earth birds-eye comparison between Los Angeles and San Diego, you see that San Diego has successfully conserved a good deal of our unique natural landform. Before us is a chance to dedicate approximately 10,000 acres of our precious open spaces and galvanize decades of purposeful planning and advocacy. Dedicated land cannot be sold, and dedication protects the land from conversion to non-open space or parkland use. It requires a 2/3 vote by San Diego’s voters to reverse. Dedication prevents the natural land from being nibbled away as our city grows over the decades. We believe, with your support, this City Council will dedicate some 10,000 acres of City-owned land in 2012.
